'Gangnam Style' set for inclusion in the British dictionary | Hmusix

Posted on December 21, 2012

Just when we thought it was going away, it turns out that Psy’s ‘Gangnam Style’ could in fact be here to stay.

Collins British dictionary have 12 words of the year every year, chosen from over 7,000 submissions to the online database. The words are chosen due to how often they’re spoken and how likely they are to stay in conversation .

‘Gangnam Style’ has been selected as one of the words of the year and, although this doesn’t mean it will necessarily be added to the dictionary, the dictionary’s consultant editor Ian Brookes sounds optimistic.

Brookes said, "It’s obviously a craze, so there’s the possibility it will go away. But it’s been heard by so many people that I think it’s probably earned the right to go into the dictionary."

He added, "We were looking for words that told the story of the year. Some words are from events that have been and gone and so are not likely to stick around … but others are probably here to stay."

The other words of the year include ‘fiscal cliff’, ‘Romneyshambles’ and ‘mummy porn’ – after the success of 50 Shades of Grey.

‘Gangnam Style’ recently hit the one billion views mark on YouTube, which makes it the first YouTube video to do so, beating out Justin Bieber’s ‘Baby’ for the achievement.

The clip also won Best Music Video at this year’s MTV Europe Music Awards.
