“Gangnam Style”, the K-Pop phenomenon, passed one billion YouTube views on Friday.

South Korean pop star Psy posted the video in July. Since then, it’s averaged more than 150 million views a month, passing Justin Bieber’s “Baby” as the most viewed video on YouTube.

And not just YouTube, reports Rolling Stone — it’s the first video on the Internet to reach that milestone.

The song’s catchy beat, outlandish videos and ensuing parodies have been a huge hit with American fans — with performances and interviews on American shows like “Ellen,” “On Air with Ryan Seacrest,” and “Today.”

In an interview with MTV, Psy said: "It's been a tremendous year, but to accomplish this... [T]o have [the video] reach 1 billion views ... I don't think even I can break that record!"

And YouTube noted how its platform has changed music distribution:

In the past ... [it] was more difficult to learn about great artists from around the world. But with a global platform at their fingertips, people are now discovering and sharing amazing music from all over the planet...” (Via USA Today)

According to Mashable, Psy will make about $ 7.9 million from the music video through commercial endorsements, iTunes downloads, and advertising revenue from YouTube.

Earlier this month Psy was under fire for anti-American lyrics he performed nearly a decade ago — a performance he apologized for. (Video via TMZ)

So the billion-view milestone might indicate fans are still down with “Gangnam Style.” According to Rolling Stone, the video makes $ 2 for every 1,000 views on YouTube.
