'Gangnam Style' Becomes First YouTube Video to Hit 1 Billion Views

Gangnam Style Cover“A million views isn’t cool, you know what’s cool? A billion views.” Less than a month ago, PSY’s “Gangnam Style” surpassed Justin Bieber’s “Baby” to become the most viewed video on YouTube at 805 million views. Today, the viral music video has reached another milestone: 1 billion views.

In just one month, “Gangnam Style” has been viewed another 200 million times. For comparison purposes, “Baby” has only been viewed another 10 million times.

1 billion views in just 5 months is incredible and the viewcount still doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. In addition to the billion views are countless flash mobs, remixes, and parodies.

In a blog post, YouTube stated the following:

PSY’s success is a great testament to the universal appeal of catchy music– and er, great equine dance moves. In the past, music distribution was mostly regional. It was more difficult to learn about great artists from around the world. But with a global platform at their fingertips, people are now discovering and sharing amazing music from all over the planet, by artists like Brazilian Michel Teló and Belgian-Australian Gotye.

Were you the one billionth viewer? Do you think “Gangnam Style” will ever be surpassed by another video?
