MANILA, Philippines – Korean boy band Big Bang held their Alive Galaxy Tour 2012 at Wembley Arena in London on Dec. 14 and 15, attracting more than 20,000 fans.
The London gig was the only European stop in the tour and it proved to be successful. Wembley Arena has hosted many events including concerts of Madonna, Taylor Swift, Beyonce and Spice Girls.
British newspaper The Guardian said that compared to Justin Bieber and others, Big Bang’s concert contained more elements.
“But there is one core difference, which makes the show a fabulous spectacle – whatever Bieber and company do, Big Bang do with fluorescent bells on. The edges are crisper, the sound louder, the dancing sharper,” wrote The Guardian’s Caroline Sullivan in her review.
The Guardian described Big Bang as the “superstars of K-pop.”
“And it’s off into another song that sounds like it was grown in an electro-urban petri dish. Anyone who has recently been to a boyband show will recognise what follows during Big Bang’s first UK show: the lickety-split choreography, endless costume changes and lighting effects that drain the national grid. The difference is that the five glistening dreamboats at the centre of the action had never toured outside south-east Asia before this year – Big Bang are superstars of K-pop, South Korea’s contribution to global youth culture,” the newspaper said.
The newspaper said that Big Bang is similar to One Direction and Justin Bieber.
“Most notable tonight is how indistinguishable they are from One Direction and Justin Bieber. While Psy, of Gangnam Style infamy, is a blue-chip eccentric, Big Bang trade in a more international currency,” it said.
The Guardian said Big Bang’s songs can enter UK’s music charts.
“The two-hour show is packed with songs that would slot neatly into the UK top 10 – Fantastic Baby, for instance, is pure Guetta-style Eurocheese – and cover versions such as Chris Brown’s Don’t Judge Me are display their adeptness at American RB,” it said.
It added, “This multicultural audience, anyway, is proof that pop music delivered by handsome boys who also (during How Gee) zip around on Segways recognises no boundaries. But there is one core difference, which makes the show a fabulous spectacle – whatever Bieber and company do, Big Bang do with fluorescent bells on. The edges are crisper, the sound louder, the dancing sharper.”
Big Bang started the Galaxy Tour in Seoul last March. From there, they toured Asia, US and Peru. The boy band performed in the Philippines last October.
The next stop in the tour is Fukuoka, Japan, where the concert will be held on Dec. 22. After completing the Japan leg on Jan. 12 and 13 in Osaka, the final concert tour will be held in Seoul on Jan. 25 to 27.
