RECENTLY on a quiet Saturday night in, I discovered a gem amongst the horde of videos on Youtube. It was a three minute short film directed by Keegan Wilcox titled Porcelain Unicorn (2010). Best three minutes of my night. Porcelain Unicorn is a beautiful film, with a simple and striking story. It is magnificent to watch and it proves great storytelling can be done under five minutes. The film was used as an entry for Philips Cinema Parallel Lines ‘Tell It Your Way’ Competition; Porcelain Unicorn was picked as the overall winner by renowned director Ridley Scott.
‘Tell It Your Way’ had specific guidelines. Only six lines of dialogue was permitted. They were:
What was that?
It’s a unicorn.
Never seen one up close before.
Beautiful.
Get away, Get away!
I’m sorry.
I was trying to think of making a movie with someone saying “It’s a unicorn” and the only thing I came up with was some movie only stoners would liked. Fail. The movies that were selected for contention puts my brain to shame.
Wilcox directs a superb short film; capturing fine details and engaging the viewer with emotions and sentiment. He incorporates the compulsory lines of dialogue with ease into the story and the fact that there is only six lines of dialogue requires the viewer to concentrate on the eloquent cinematography.
Other entrants of the ‘Tell It Your Way’ competition were innovative and creative in their films. No one story was the same even though all of them had the same restrictions. In my chain of searching I managed to find the viewers choice winner, Baby Time (2010) directed by Cédric Petitcollin. It is no surprise why it won the viewers choice award. Baby Time is enthralling in a way different from Porcelain Unicorn in that it uses comedy and humour to capture the audience. These two polarising films however, are both well directed and have interesting stories.
If you have 10 minutes free I strongly recommend checking out these short films. You will feel inspired to make your own unicorn inspired movie.
