Usher is the newest male coach on “The Voice” and he has been doing the rounds discussing the show with the likes of Jimmy Fallon and “The Today Show” hosts Kathie Lee and Hoda Kotb.
Usher’s search for the new Bieber
How it all works: The Voice has a unique structure. The wannabe stars have to audition for a panel of celebrity judges. If they are chosen, the tables are suddenly turned…. the next step is for the contestant to choose his or her coach from the celebrity panel. It’s up to the celebrity judges to sell themselves to the contestant that they want to coach. If their student wins the competition, the judge/coach wins, too. It’s a twist on the ole American Idol model.
The music legend with a cool, smooth reputation openly admitted he is looking for the next Justin Bieber.
“[The contestants] wanna know they’re getting a coach that’s gonna fight for them,” he said. “I don’t play the Justin Bieber card often. I had to pull it out maybe once.”
For Usher, stardom is serious stuff (unlike for us).
“When you’re looking for talent that could be like [Justin Bieber] or greater, for me I take it seriously. Of course, winning “The Voice” is ultimately the goal of the show. But really preparing incredible entertainers is really what I’m all about. Really artist development,” he explained to Kathie Lee and Hoda on “The Today Show”.
Usher signed ‘The Bieb’ in a joint venture with Scooter Braun, in 2008, and he went onto become an international megastar. But despite Usher’s clear dedication to practice what he preaches, he’s up for coaching bids against the likes of Shakira and Adam Levine. On his first day, he was still trying hard to win the contestants over– definitely unleashing his competitive side.
Fitting right in
Usher has made himself right at home on the show with his feet up, his red shoes on display and promises and quick responses coming thick and fast.
On Jimmy’s show, Usher displayed some dead pan humour and promised fans they would see much more of this side of him on “The Voice”. So no doubt there is more to the heartthrob than meets the eye.
