Where did Justin Bieber go? | International Marketing Communications

Move over Bieb’s, the South Korean phenomenon rapper Psy’s video “Gangnam Style” has just surpassed the reigning YOUTUBE champ by becoming the most watch video of all time. With over 845 million views and counting, Gangnam Style first posted to YOUTUBE this past July, while Justin Bieber’s “Baby” hit the website in late 2010. Psy’s viral rise in only a few short months demonstrates the power of the global internet and offers the potential for fame and fortune to come from the most unexpected places. Not many would expect a 34 year old, over-weight, questionably dressed Korean to become more popular than a baby-faced teen sensation that is the heart-throb of every 11 year old in the United States, but that is exactly what has happen. While Gangham style approaches a billion views, it shows no signs of slowing down as the dance style has been embraced by late-night tv, prime-time sitcoms, political candidates and anyone looking for an easy target to parody. It’s not hard to understand how an attractive teen idol like Justin Bieber can become so popular, especially here in the United States, but it is refreshing to see an obscure, funky and off-the-wall Korean make such a big impact across the globe.

Interestingly, the Bieb’s video only has a 45% approval rating (much more “dislikes” than “likes”), while 84% like Psy’s Gangam Style video showing that there is more there than meets the eye. You should check it out.
