At about the same time as the original ‘Gangnam Style’ video was surpassing Justin Bieber’s single “Baby” to become the most viewed video in Youtube history, a parody video posted by Kingston’s Royal Military College also achieved viral status by marking its 100,000th view.
Uploaded in mid-October, the RMC rendition shows cadets dancing to the song in a number of locations around RMC and prominently features the institution’s “Paladin” mascot.
However, not everyone appearing in the video planned on participating that day…
As noted by Kai Zhao, the video’s director, the scene showing a wedding party engaged in the now famous Gangam Style dance was completely spontaneous.
In a ‘Behind the Scenes‘ post on RMC Club’s eVeritas newsletter, Zhao wrote:
“Another random add-in was 26229 OCdt (II) Richard Harding’s wedding which we had unintentionally crashed; they had spotted the Paladin as they were doing a photo shoot on the steps of Currie hall and wanted some pictures to include the school mascot. I thought, why not have them dance too?”
As of today, the RMC video has garnered an additional 2,000 views since crossing the 100K mark. A number no doubt helped along by coverage from national news outlets that included CTV Morning Live and Macleans’ On Campus section.
Gangnam Style was released on July 15, 2012 as the lead single on South Korean artist PSY’s sixth studio album. As of November 26, his music video for the song has been viewed over 830 million times on YouTube.
