'I was picked on - it's a tough feeling'
Justin Bieber stars in a newly released anti-cyberbullying campaign, in order to raise awareness about online hate - and settle a legal dispute.
El Biebo, who is sporting a rather fetching pair of specs in the vid, is seen talking to a bullied teen in a (sort of strange) office/study/gentlemen's club setting, and says: "Kids are mean, and they don't realise how hurtful what it is they're saying.
"Words are powerful. Sometimes you'd rather be physically beaten up than emotional damaged. I was picked on. It's a tough feeling but you can get through it."
Very wise words from the Biebertron there.
The video was recorded as part of a plea deal Justin's management made with the New York Prosecuter's office, after a 2009 incident which saw Scooter Braun and Def Jam Records executive arrested.
Scooter and James Roppo were ordered by police to shut down an El Biebo autograph session in Long Island, New York after the law enforcers became concerned fans would be injured when 3000 teens turned up to the event.
However, police said that although they asked Bieber's staff to send a tweet from his account letting fans know the event had been cancelled, the following tweet was sent out instead:
"On my way to Roosevelt Field Mall in Long Island, NY to sign and meet fans! I'm pumped. See u there."
THEN it transpired that Island Def Jam Record Music Group employees were unable to tweet futher from Justin's account because his manager Scooter had changed the password to prevent anyone cancelling the event.
Scooter did eventually send two tweets cancelling the autograph session, but he and James Roppo were charged with misdemeanors - charges that were dropped in a plea agreement which called for Justin to record this anti-cyberbulling public service announcement.
PHEW. Did you get all that? All that legal stuff made us feel like extras in Legally Blonde, or something.
"The Internet can be used as a place to have a greater positive impact on the world," Justin is seen saying in the 11 minute video. "The web should be used to inspire others, not spread hate or hurt."
Which, regardless of the reasons behind the making of the video - is a WELL IMPORTANT message to promote, we think you'll agree.
