Politicker reports that Conservative Republican Congressional Representative Michael Grimm has
weighed into the controversy surrounding a decision by PS 90 Principal Greta Hawkins to force a group of kindergartners to sing
Justin Bieber's "Baby Love" at their
graduation, instead of red-blooded American standard "God Bless the USA/Proud to Be an American", which they'd been practicing for months.
You probably know the words to the Greenwood song, but here's a sample:
And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
Here's a sample of the Bieber song:
Are we an item? Girl, quit playin'/ "We're just friends," what are you sayin'?/ Said "there's another," and looked right in my eyes/ My first love broke my heart for the first time.
There's a lot more to this story than swapping out Lee Greenwood for Justin Bieber, though.
Hawkins, a black Jehovah's Witness, claiming she was only trying to be culturally sensitive -- Jehovah's Witnesses, for instance, refuse to say the "Pledge of Allegiance" -- managed to set off the local haters, one of whom reportedly sent her a letter filled with racist insults.
Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott is standing behind Hawkins's decision.
