Roasted babies are apparently a big business in Thailand. A British citizen, Chow Hok Kuen, 28, was arrested on Friday after he was found with the bodies of six male babies, roasted and "covered in gold leaf." Officials believe that the babies were to be used for a black magic ritual. The grisly discovery was made in a hotel room in Bangkok, although Kuen was staying at a back-packer hotel. The babies were stuffed in travel bags.

Police followed up on a tip that "infant corpses were being offered to wealthy clients through a website advertising black magic services," according to News24. Specifically, the practice is known as "Kuman Thong" and is described in ancient Thai manuscripts. It is typically practiced with a small statue or amulet and means "Golden Baby Boy." Obviously, the Wiwat Kumchumnan, sub-division chief of the police's Children and Women Protection unit said "The bodies are of children between the ages of two and seven months." It is unclear where the babies came from, but it is possible that they are the bodies of aborted children, as 2,000 dead babies were found at a Bangkok temple in 2010. In that case, there was no connection made to the smuggling of dead children, and the undertaker said that "he usually cremated the bodies but the crematorium had not been working properly." It is not much of a stretch to believe that the bodies were kept purposely, since there is a demand for them, which is inconceivable.

It is believed that the British citizen planned to smuggle the roasted babies into Thailand, where he could make a huge profit. His "clients" believe that the corpses are sold to "clients who believe they will make them lucky and rich." In a bizarre story from 2005, a Buddhist monk "roasted a baby to create a powerful ghost," in addition to tricking women into having sex with him (by telling them that it would make them more attractive). Whoever thinks dead babies will make them rich clearly needs a bit of educating. Where is the respect for human dignity?

Chow was to be paid once it was determined how much his "boss" would make, Kun Yi Chen, who is a frequent visitor to Thailand according to immigration records, as reported by Asiaone. Chow himself has been to Thailand 12 times, and is also a frequent visitor to Laos and Cambodia. A police officer stated that there is actually a demand for the dead babies in Thailand and this practice is "openly advertised in Taiwan and much sought after by politicians and celebrities." Clearly, this practice needs to be stopped and there needs to be an investigation into anyone who may participate in such a heinous act.
